The data is passed between the data merge stage and the data selection stage via the data network. The task of the data selection stage is to apply selection criteria using temporal associations and multiplicity filters as defined by the physics of the experiment in order to select from the total data stream potential data events. This task will be performed within a multi-processor Linux PC. The data stream of potential events generated will be buffered and passed to the data analysis stage for further consideration.
This stage is broadly equivalent to the selection performed by the hardware Master Trigger module in more conventional systems.

For the GREAT system the Data Selection Stage will be a component of the Data Processor PC.
